Guided Walks

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a huge area of white sand dunes dotted with many crystal-clear rainwater lagoons.  The best way this surreal landscape can be experienced is by taking guided walks into the park.  These can vary in length depending on the time contraints and health of the individual.

The most challenging of the walks crosses the entire park over 3 days passing through Queimada dos Britos.  The trek is a challenging one although taken at a reasonable pace, with plenty of rest stops, it can be achieved relatively easily.  There are plenty of rainwater lagoons in which to take a refreshing swim and cool down. The guides can carry your bag (pack light) and it is advised to bring a sunhat and clothing that offers protection from the hot sun.

The oasis of Quemado dos Britos is found halfway across the park and a handful of families have lived here for generations.  A beautiful and surreal landcape of mixed vegetation, lagoons and hills. It is a welcome stop and provides a place to rest and a chance to explore the area.

At the end of the long trek weary travellers reach the town of Santo Amaro do
Maranhão where they can rest and eat before continuing on their journey and returning to Atins by car, or continuing onwards to Sao Luis.

Horse Trekking

Whether you want a short excursion to take in the sights of the village and beach, or would prefer to explore lagoons and dunes further into the park, we can oganise horses and a guide to make the most of your trip.  The trips all leave from the bar and usually start early morning or later in the afternoon.

No experience of riding a horse is necessary and an experienced guide will ensure that your trek is safe and enjoyable.

Fishing trip: If you feel like taking part in the tradional pastime of the local community then maybe you would like to go fishing with local fishermen.  Its a great way to get a feeling for the way of life and soak up the tranquility of being out on the water.

Flights over the park

Taking a flight over the park is a great way to see the area and to appreciate the size and beauty of the Lençóis Maranhenses.  Flights leave from Barreirinhas and take up to a maximum of four people.  Lasting for approximately and hour the flight route takes you on a journey down the Preguiças river to where it meets the sea and over the park and villages within, including Atins.  Sunrise and sunset flights are the best to appreciate the colours and contours of the dunes and lagoons.
