Discover the real Brasil.

International Visitors

Brasil is larger than the continental United States. Geographers generally divide the country into five regions corresponding to the following bioregions:

  • Amazon
  • Centralwest
  • Northeast
  • South
  • Southcentral.

At present the nearest international flights to the Northeast arrive in Fortaleza international airport and from there a short transfer flight to Sao Luis airport.

TAP airlines flying out of Portugal and flights from the UK are usually routed through Lisbon. (www.flytap.com)

Also check out CharterFlights for some good bargains to Salvador and Natal (www.charterflights.co.uk). From there you'd need to get a transfer flight to Sao Luis, there is a daily connecting flight with the Brazilian airline TAM (www.tamairlines.com).

you can also try Gol for internal flights. (www.voegol.com.br)

Getting there from the North (Sao Luis)

The nearest airport is Sao Luis.  Once there you will need to complete the 3 hour journey to Barreirinhas by bus, minibus or taxi for about 25/35 Reals per person.

Note:
Brazilian currency is the Real.    £1 British

Barreirinhas is a very busy town and it is advised to continue your journey quickly. The best way to get to Atins is by boat.

Speedboat (voadeira):
A nice way to see the river and the quickest way to arrive in Atins. These can be found on the riverfront and take around an hour to reach the village. If you have time you can stop off at Vassouras to meet the monkeys and drink an Agua de Coco.

The cost of hiring a small boat is 150 Reals per boat seating 5 people, or about 30 Reals per person.  They expect you to bargain so don't accept inflated prices.

Local Boat (Barco da Linha):
There are daily boats that leave at around 10am from the riverside.  They can get very crowded and take around 4/5 hours to reach Atins, but are a great way to see the river and see how the locals travel if you have the time.
There is limited service on weekends so best to arrive on a weekday.
5 Reals per person.

Toyota 4x4:
The local transport that brings you straight to the village is unreliable, unpredictable and a whole lot of fun if you are ready for an adventure.  Be prepared to be uncomfortably exposed to the elements and hang on! Journey times are around 2-3 hours depending on the season.
Also has limited service on a weekend. Leaves at 10.30 am (ask in town for location).
10 Reals per person.

Getting there from the South (Jericoacoara/Parnaiba)

If travelling from the south (e.g. Jericoacoara), the route you will need to take is Camocim - Parnaiba - Tutoia - Barreirinhas. You can alternatively take a 4x4 to Cabure where you will be able to organise boat transport to Atins.
